Purpose & Vision

A community-rooted, family-led respite-center vision for students with disabilities and their caregivers. The model brings together inclusive recreation, enrichment, family leadership, and community connection.

Why Vista? Why Now?

 Bridges to Care is a locally anchored solution, co-designed with Vista-based leaders, VUSEPTA, and families. It responds to a documented regional gap in services for youth with mild to moderate disabilities.

Families need opportunities for rest, connection, and support. Bridges to Care is developing a community-based model that brings caregiver support together with inclusive activities for children and families.

Vista-Oceanside serves high concentrations of Latino, Filipino, and military families caring for youth with disabilities. Caregivers report burnout, isolation, difficulty navigating Medi-Cal and Regional Center systems, and limited culturally responsive options. 

Bridges to Care activates regional talent and caregiving leadership through deep co-design with impacted stakeholders, integration of disability justice values, and direct alignment with Vista's Community Schools and wellness priorities.

What We're Building

The Bridges to Care Respite Center is in development. Planned programming includes respite, inclusive recreation, enrichment, and peer and community connection.


Past Program Example: The Summer 2026 Bridges Kids Club pilot included Nature & Outdoors, Arts & Crafts, and Cooking & Food days, with daily community-building activities.


For Families: The proposed hub would connect respite with education, health, housing, and other community supports.


For Partners: The model brings coordinated referrals, warm handoffs, and follow-up across organizations. Contact CIS to learn about current program availability.

  • Partner with local colleges/universities to recruit and train students in special education and behavioral health
  • Establish practicum and internship roles that support the respite center and broader workforce pipelines

  • Provide vocational exploration, career-aligned extracurriculars, and wellness-based roles
  • Embed afterschool roles and leadership development for youth to build soft skills, confidence, and readiness

  • Create paid, leadership-based roles for caregivers in navigation, peer support, and program development
  • Deliver equity-centered training and mentorship through caregiver-led facilitation and nonprofit partnerships

Integrated System of Care

  • Align with CalAIM, Community Schools, Medi-Cal, and Regional Center infrastructure
  • Serve as a hub for trauma-informed care, navigation, and culturally responsive programming
  • Implement a “No Wrong Door” access model, ensuring families can enter through any point and receive coordinated, seamless referrals to services across education, health, behavioral health, and disability systems
